About FreeNCLBTutoring.org
FreeNCLBTutoring.org was launched with a very simple mission – to increase parental
awareness of and student participation in the FREE tutoring program offered under
the No Child Left Behind Law.
In the 2007-2008 school year almost 90% of the students who were eligible for free
tutoring did not receive it, and put simply, we aim to change that! Our intention
is not to comment on the politics of No Child Left Behind but to simply spread the
word about this great benefit provided by No Child Left Behind.
On October 28, 2008 U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings herself highlighted
the importance of improving parental notification for the free tutoring or supplemental
education services provision of the No Child Left Behind law. In her remarks to
educators, state and local policymakers and business leaders at South Carolina Educational
Television in Columbia, S.C., Secretary Spelling said the following:
"Some [educators] resist the presence of outside [tutoring] organizations. In some
places, parents are actually being discouraged from enrolling their kids in tutoring.
One letter a [school] district sent out said, and I quote, "While we must clearly
offer students the choice of ... receiving [tutoring], we strongly urge parents
to consider the benefits of keeping your child and the financial resources in the
home school."
Of course, these services can't make a difference if parents don't know they're
available. One survey found that in urban school districts, only half of parents
knew their children were eligible."
We agree with Secretary Spelling’s assessment so we started this website to help
spread the word about free NCLB tutoring.
What services does FreeNCLBTutoring.org offer?
We provide parents and guardians a website that quickly and easily lets them determine
if their school offers a free tutoring program and whether or not their child might
be eligible to participate.
Without this website parents may be completely unaware of the program and/or have
to visit numerous web pages on school, school district, state departments and the
federal department of education websites. The information about the free tutoring
programs often feels hidden and, even if discovered, can be hard to understand and/or
determine eligibility.
